California Crown looking for two from two
THE highly-rated three-year-old chestnut colt California Crown
hunts his second win on the trot in the running of the $1.1-million Monday Morning Trophy, the main event on today’s nine-race card.
The race is a Restricted Allowance II contest for native-bred three-year-olds (non-winners of two) and imported three-year-olds and upward (maidens) over seven furlongs (1,400m).
California Crown was an impressive winner on debut 22 days ago when putting away rivals by three and a half lengths over five and half furlongs (1,100m) in a time 1:09.3. Although the final time wasn’t that flashy, the manner in which California Crown dealt with the field is a clear indication of a horse with talent.
With improvement expected and working well, California Crown should win again. Robert Halledeen remains in the saddle.
California Crown, who is bred by Hedge Fund out of the Wizard of Gold mare
Dream Big, is owned by champion Carlton Watson and trained by champion Jason DaCosta.
Global Machine, Lady Lauren, Amma, and Uncle Peck are expected to run good races here.
The Monday Morning is positioned as the sixth event on the day with a post time of 3:35 pm, with the first race at 12:15 pm.
Global Machine finished fourth behind Fearless Attack, Battle Angel, and
Lady Lauren over six and a half furlongs (1,300m) on April 28. Although the distance has increased for this race, Global Machine has been working fairly well coming into the race and, based on his potential, he is expected to run well, especially with the figure 8 on.
Lady Lauren is a capable runner who has been doing fairly well in her races. She came home in third place by a length and a half behind Fearless Attack and Bangle Angel over six and a half furlongs. She was seen making strong headway in deep stretch and so the extended half-furlong (100m) for this race should suit her well. Expect another bold bid from Lady Lauren here.
Amma was expected to figure in the Thornbird Stakes over seven furlongs on April 13 but she failed to land a blow in that race as she finished in 10th position by 11 lengths behind Banadura.
Amma has been working fairly well coming into this race and as such, an improved effort is expected from her.
Uncle Peck, an American-bred runner, makes his debut on local soil here. The three-year-old bay colt has been training well and as such, should run accordingly.
The field is completed by Buttercup, Chesney, Bold Move,Playfair, Don’t Tell Lou Lou, and Riches to Rags.
