Mahogany to brush aside rivals in Seeking My Dream Trophy
MAHOGANY, the Ian Parsard-conditioned, well-decorated, seven-year-old chestnut gelding returns for his second start of the year in what is expected to be a successful run in the $1.4-million Seeking My Dream Trophy, the feature race on today’s nine-race card.
Mahogany is without a doubt the standout horse in this race, collecting $18,476,500 in stakes. He has raced 31 times, winning 17 times, while placing second on six occasions, and third three times.
Bred by Sensational Slam out of the Traditional mare Mete-Orite, Mahogany made his seasonal debut 35 days ago when he finished third in the Lady Geeta Trophy over six furlongs (1,200m) behind Desert of Malibu and A Gift From Ben.
However, Mahogany was promoted to second place after the winner was disqualified for causing interference to him at the furlong pole (100m). Mahogany is expected to be a lot sharper for this race, and despite carrying a weight of 57.0 kg (126lb) his class alone should put away the other contenders.
He has been timely prepared for this race, having galloped eight furlongs (1,600m) in 1:44.0, with the last seven furlongs (1,400m) coming in at 1:31.2 on Saturday, May 11. Champion jockey Reyan Lewis remains in the saddle aboard Mahogany.
The Open Allowance Contest for three-year-olds and upward over seven and a half furlongs (1,500m) is positioned as the seventh event on the day with a post time of 4:15 pm. The first race is at 12:15 p.m..
Though it appears that Mahogany will have an easy time in this race, other runners in the six-horse field, such as Mamma Mia and Further and Beyond, may have an impact on the outcome.
Mamma Mia, last year’s 1000 Guineas and Jamaica Oaks winner, has notched one win from four outings this season. Mamma Mia’s win came over this distance on March 30 when she made all the running to beat rivals by a length in 1:35.0. The Jason DaCosta trainee consistently demonstrates a preference for leading from the front, and with her current form and being well prepared she is going to have a say here.
On Sunday, May 12 Mamma Mia galloped seven furlongs in a blistering 1:27.4, suggesting she is fit and ready to rumble. Panamanian Josue Osorio will ride.
Further and Beyond, a former Horse of the Year, has been doing very well in his races of late. Further and Beyond has secured one win and two second-place finishes from four starts this season. His win was a dead heat finish with Atlantic Convoy over seven furlongs on February 24. Despite not being as dominant as before the Donovan Hutchinson trainee remains a contender in this race, especially with his visor removed. Title-chasing jockey Raddesh Roman will continue to do riding honours here.
The field is completed by Taurus Boy, Sonny T and Chippy, and Divine Force.
Also on tap is the $1.05-million Awesome Power Trophy, a maiden condition race for native-bred three-year-old fillies over seven and a half furlongs. The race will open proceedings on the day.
Immeasurable Joy, Princess Fianie, and Kaylyn Melody are the likely runners in the nine-horse field to fight out the finish.
Trained by Anthony Nunes, Immeasurable Joy finished in second place by 3¾ lengths behind Rosetta in a six-furlong race on May 4. Immeasurable Joy was seen losing ground in the final furlong of the race, thereby making this journey of seven and a half furlongs potentially testy for this filly. However, this is an average bunch of runners, and with the red-hot Roman in the saddle, Immeasurable Joy can win.
