Clarke opens 400mH season in LA
Watson among Jamaicans to compete in ATL
WORLD Athletics Championships finalist and World Under-20 record holder Roshawn Clarke is to open his men’s 400m hurdles season on Saturday when he takes part on the second day of the USATF LA Grand Prix at UCLA Drake Stadium in Los Angeles.
Clarke has run a series of 400m — the fastest being 46.05 seconds — and was part of Jamaica’s mixed 4x400m relay team that qualified for the Olympics two weeks ago in The Bahamas.
He is to be joined by former national champion Jaheel Hyde and Malik James-King, a surprise winner at last weekend’s Jamaica Athletics International at the National Stadium in Jamaica.
They are to face off against World Championships medallist Kyron McMaster of the British Virgin Islands and Americans Aldrich Bailey and Trevor Bassitt.
Andrenette Knight is to take part in the women’s race against Anna Cockrell of the United States, Gianna Woodruff of Panama, as well as Cassandra Tate and Jessica Wright.
World Indoor Championships bronze medallist Ackeem Blake is to contest the men’s 100m against Botswana’s World Championships silver medallist Letsile Tebogo who will be running his first 100m of the season. Also set to feature are Cejhae Green of Antigua, Kyree King of the US, and Malachi Murray of Canada.
Kemba Nelson, Alana Reid, Natasha Morrison and Tia Clayton are down for the women’s 100m A race against Mellisa Jefferson, Twanisha Terry and Morolake Akinosun.
Briana Williams and Lana-Tava Thomas are down for the B race, matching strides against Abby Steiner, Destiny Smith-Barnett and English Gardner.
National men’s 400m champion Sean Bailey is to open his season over the one-lap race against Americans Vernon Norwood, Bryce Deadmon and Michael Norman, as well as former World Championships and Olympic Games champion Kirani James of Grenada.
Stacey Ann Williams is down for the women’s 400m and faces a tough field that should include Mary Moraa of Kenya, Alexis Holmes of the US, Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain, Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic, and Quanera Hayes of the USA.
Two-time World Championships silver medallist Shanieka Ricketts and Kimberly Williams are to battle in the women’s triple jump against World Indoor medallist Thea Lafond of Dominica and Tori Franklin of the US.
Rajindra Campbell is the only Jamaican in the men’s shot put. He is expected to compete against a quality field of Payton Otterdahl and Roger Steen of the US, Tom Walsh of New Zealand, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi of Nigeria, and Uziel Munoz of Mexico.
Elsewhere, Ackera Nugent, Demisha Roswell and Yanique Thompson are to contest the 100m hurdles on Saturday’s Adidas Atlanta City Games, Piedmont Park in Atlanta, in one of several clashes featuring Jamaicans.
The Jamaicans, who are continuing their preparations for the National Championships in late June, are among a number of top athletes down to participate. The meet is to be held outside of the traditional stadium setting, on a specially constructed elevated track.
Nugent, a World Championships finalist last year, Roswell and Thompson will face off with world record holder and world leader Tobi Amusan of Nigeria who ran 12.40 seconds in Kingston last weekend. Also down to feature are former world record holder Kendra Harrison of the US and Great Britain’s Cindy Sember.
Antonio Watson, world champion over 400m, and two-time World Championships men’s 100m finalist Oblique Seville are to clash over the 200m. Former 400m world champion Steven Gardner of The Bahamas, Trinidad’s former World Athletics Indoors 400m gold medallist Jereem Richards, and American Elija Godwin are also set to compete.
Fresh off his Diamond League win, Carey McLeod is to contest the men’s long jump in which he is to meet newly minted World Under-20 record holder Mattia Furlani of Italy. Furlani jumped 8.36m at a meet in Italy this week.
