New home for Port Maria Police Station
PORT MARIA, St Mary — After years of unfavourable working conditions and calls from fire and health officials for it to be closed, the Port Maria Police Station is a step closer to being relocated. The proposed location in Trinity, a few minutes outside of the bustling town centre of Port Maria, once housed Bess for Less Car Mart.
“We have been threatened to be closed by the health and fire departments on more than one occasion,” superintendent of police in charge of the parish, Bobette Morgan Simpson, said during last week’s monthly meeting of the St Mary Municipal Corporation.
Those agencies will have to sign off on the proposed location before the station is relocated.
“Although a definite timeline hasn’t been set for the relocation as yet, this is a welcome move of the Port Maria Police Station and the divisional headquarters,” Morgan Simpson told the meeting.
She said measures will be put in place to minimise disruptions resulting from the move. Among the issues being explored is setting up a police post inside the town’s transportation centre.
“We have taken all considerations into account, [in terms of] policing. We are looking at all these and the details will be worked out in due time,” said the senior cop.
