KSAMC to undertake two major Labour Day projects
THE Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) will be undertaking work at the Jamaica Society for the Blind and Missionaries of the Poor in the Corporate Area on Labour Day, Thursday,
May 23.
Kingston Mayor Andrew Swaby, who made the disclosure during the KSAMC’s monthly meeting on Tuesday, said the engagements are intended to improve accessibility at the locations, in keeping with the theme for Labour Day – ‘Ramp Up di Access… Showcase that You Care’.
“At the Jamaica Society for the Blind [on] Old Hope Road we will be retrofitting the ramp to enable better accessibility for wheelchairs. At the Missionaries of the Poor we will be undertaking rehabilitation of the corridors at their facility at Laws Street to facilitate easier travel of wheelchairs,” he said.
Councillor Swaby said, too, that a number of plants have been procured for planting on Labour Day.
Meanwhile, he said the work of the Cleaner Kingston Committee will get under way with several beautification projects in the downtown district.
“To kick-start the work we intend to prune the trees in the general parade area, and on King Street we will be clearing dump sites, [and] planter boxes and flowerbeds will be made ready for planting. We will be washing and sanitising the area around St William Grant Park as we get closer to Labour Day,” Swaby added.
The committee held its first meeting on April 10, and among the issues discussed was the need for a reliable and effective waste management and disposal system as well as beautification projects to enhance the appearance of public spaces.
The mayor also announced that the corporation will be disseminating notices to owners who have allowed dumping to take place on their properties.
“We are appealing to the business operators who engage in the practice of making informal arrangements with persons for disposal of their waste to desist from doing so. Oftentimes this waste is dumped in public spaces or private properties.
“This will not be tolerated and the KSAMC and our partners will be seeking to enforce anti-dumping laws to address these breaches. We are cautioning you to do the right thing. Owners have an obligation not to create or allow nuisance on their properties,” Swaby said.
He also urged more corporate bodies and well-wishers to join the campaign to create and maintain a clean, thriving, and beautiful environment across Kingston and St Andrew.
