WATCH: Jolyan Silvera denied bail, lawyers to file appeal
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Murder accused Jolyan Silvera had his bail application denied when his case was brought before the Home Circuit Court on Tuesday.
Following the Court’s decision, Silvera’s attorney, King’s Counsel (KC) Peter Champagnie, revealed his plans to file an appeal. Silvera is to remain behind bars until then.
Meanwhile, scores of placard-bearing women gathered outside the courthouse on Tuesday expressing frustration at the number of women being killed violently in the country. The women shared that if convicted, murderers should be held accountable for their crimes.
“I’m saying today that we are tired of the men shedding the ladies’ blood upon the land and if yuh do yuh crime, you must do your time. No bail for you,” one woman told Observer Online.
Highlighting that there is no political motivation behind the protest, the women said they are simply tired of the violence being meted out to women.
“If you notice, we nuh inna no colour out here. No politics, just justice,” another woman said.
Silvera, a former People’s National Party (PNP) Member of Parliament, was charged with murder in January following the death of his wife, Melissa. Melissa was found dead at the couple’s home on November 10, 2023.
It was initially believed that she died from natural causes, but an autopsy later revealed that she was shot.
