Powell rides brace at Lethbridge
LETHBRIDGE, Alberta, (CMC) — Jamaican jockey Andre Powell logged two winners at Rocky Mountain Turf Club here Sunday to come away with the honours on the five-race card.
He opened his account in race two over three furlongs with 4-5 bet
Hockeydayincanada, carrying the three-year-old brown gelding to a 2½-length victory over the three-year-old and upward maidens.
Powell then followed up in race four over five furlongs when he guided favourite Square Root to a 1¾-length win over the three-year-olds and upward.
Square Root, a seven-year-old bay gelding, duelled early on with
Redneck Remark before taking control and then holding off 2-1 choice
Boeser at the wire.
Another Jamaican rider Odeen Edwards, in his first season onthe Canadian circuit, rode his first-ever winner when he combined with favourite
Eye Candy Randy to thrash the three-year-olds and upwards by 3½ lengths in the day’s opening race.
Going five furlongs, the five-year-old roan gelding Eye Candy Randy disputed the lead with Yerosilverbiz before getting clear.
Veteran Jamaican Trevor Simpson also found himself in winners’ row when he carried favourite Blue Jeans N Beer to a 3¾-length score in race three over five furlongs.
Witts Short Stop, ridden by Jamaican Orlando Foster, appeared to be making all the running in the contest before giving way late to Blue Jeans N Beer.
