Mount Pleasant back in JPL final in bid for repeat title
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Defending champions Mount Pleasant have made consecutive Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League finals after beating Waterhouse 2-0 at Sabina Park on Sunday to advance 3-2 on aggregate.
Waterhouse had the best chance of the opening 20 minutes through leading goalscorer Javane Bryan but Mount Pleasant goalkeeper Shaquan Davis came up big to deny him.
Mount Pleasant took advantage and gained the lead in the 40th minute as Devonte Campbell’s low striker went by goalkeeper Kemar Foster.
Kimoni Bailey could have made it two just before the break but Foster’s reflex save kept it out.
At the start of the second, Bailey once again had the chance to double Mount Pleasant’s advantage but he blasted over from six yards.
The second goal finally came in minute 56 as Campbell again got by Foster.
However, Mount Pleasant would have a nervy final 25 minutes when Shaquille Dyer was shown a red card after laying hands on the referee.
Waterhouse would press late on and got a goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time through a Keith Simpson header to make it 2-1. But Mount Pleasant held on to advance to the final.
Mount Pleasant now await the winner of Cavalier FC and Arnett Gardens FC as they seek to win back to back titles.
The final takes place next Sunday at the National Stadium.
