Gloria Moodie LIVING IN LOVE
The challenge for SO this Mother’s Day was to unearth a woman of substance and style whose life was a lesson in graciousness and whose name resonated in many circles. Hidden in plain sight, we soon discovered, was Gloria Hyacinth Moodie, who had just turned 97 on April 22. Hardly as flamboyant as the late fashion icon Iris Apfel but a woman of impeccable style, who travels by herself, has a weekly hairdresser’s appointment, is active on most social media platforms, enjoys a good read, and remains the consummate host and perfect addition to any dinner party.
Born in Port Antonio, Portland, to Zarette Baugh-Douet and Charles Francis Douet, Moodie attended St Anthony’s Academy in Portland, followed by St George’s Girls’ School and Immaculate Conception, got married and divorced by the age of 21, started working at Fred L Myers and Sons as a secretary and ended her career as managing director at the UDC-run Jamaica Conference Centre. A highlight of her career, she informs, was being part of a team chaired by the late media tycoon Oliver Clarke, selling Jamaican hotels internationally.
SO dares to suggest that before the term modern mum became part of our collective unconsciousness Moodie was writing her own rules and charting her own course. “I have found love so many times” (she’s been married twice), has in her own words birthed “three children, adopted many, and has five grands and five great-grands”.
Her go-to designers during her work years were Ruth Hussey, Sadie Soas and Peggy McLean, with Eurowear and Signatures her boutiques of choice.
More recently, it’s Calvin Klein and Olsen.
For today, Mother’s Day, she’s styling in Resortwear by Eroleen as she shares photos of her Trinidad Carnival days and Christmas celebrations with close friends. “I still enjoy travelling, reading and spending ‘happy times’ with my family and friends.
Her personal credo: “I live one day at a time and leave the rest to the Master.”
Fondest travel memories: “Traversing Europe with my daughters. Touring China, enjoying a Baltic cruise and visiting the Holy Land with friends.”
Her secret to a long, stylish and happy life: “Always try to stay current, do the best you can to help others and most importantly be kind!!”
Her message to mothers on this special day: “Love! Let love [always] be your first reaction in dealing with your children. Give them the best love you can and ensure that you teach them to be kind… teach them as they grow the things that will make them good people.”
SO looks forward to celebrating Moodie’s 100th birthday and wishing her yet another Happy Mother’s Day!
