Pryce runs stunning 49.72 personal best
JAMAICA’S Nickisha Pryce of University of Arkansas ran a world-leading and personal best 49.72 seconds on Friday to lead the women’s 400m qualifying during the South-Eastern Conference (SEC) Outdoor Championships on Percy Beard Track inside James Pressly Stadium at University of Florida.
Pryce, who was part of the Jamaican women’s 4x400m team that won the silver medal at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, lowered her previous best of 50.13 seconds, set at the same venue a month ago.
She also jumped six places from 14th to number eight on the Jamaican women’s 400m all-time list, just behind Novlene Williams-Mills but ahead of Sandie Richards. Pryce is second best of all time at Arkansas and the fifth-best collegiate performer ever.
Louisiana State University’s Brianna Lyston set a second personal best after running 11.09 seconds (-0.8m/s) in the first round of the women’s 100m, also at the SEC meet — less than 24 hours after she ran 22.31 to lead the qualifiers in the 200m.
Lyston, the NCAA Indoor 60m champion, lowered her times from 11.14 in the 100m and 22.53 in the 200m. Her 200m effort is the fifth-fastest time in the world this year.
Romaine Backford of University of Arkansas won the men’s high jump with 2.22m.
On Thursday, Roschell Clayton of University of Villanova and Marie Forbes of Clemson University were winners at their respective conference outdoor track and field championships.
Clayton retained her women’s Big East high jump title with 1.81m and was winning her third-straight title after. She was also previously victorious at the indoors in March.
Forbes threw a personal best 67.03m to win her first Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) women’s hammer throw title in her final year.
Courtney Lawrence of Clemson won the men’s shot put at the ACC event on Friday, while Nia Robinson of Arkansas was third in the SEC women’s long jump with an outdoor season’s best 5.45m (-0.0m/s).
