UWI guild president-elect opposes 35% hall fee hike
KINGSTON, Jamaica —Incoming guild president Perry Cummings Jr is demanding that the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona reconsider its intentions to increase hall fees by 35 per cent.
In a media release, Cummings Jr said the increase will see students in single rooms, who currently pay no less than $600,000 per year, now paying at least $800,000.
Noting that over the years the university has taken up a notable repute of increasing hall and tuition fees annually, he instead made recommendations.
Cummings Jr believes UWI should increase and improve commercial activities on campus as this has “proven to reduce what students would need to pay to cover costs by the university”. He added that UWI should settle financial agreements with the government of Jamaica that will increase its contribution to the university.
According to the Guild president, The UWI should transparently share what financial method is to be utilised by the university with the Guild of students for the upcoming academic year.
A meeting is scheduled for later this afternoon to discuss the matter.
Currently, UWI offers at least 10 halls of residence.
