Protest persists despite rain at Jamaican consulate in Manhattan
MANHATTAN, New York — Rain and chilly temperatures have not deterred Friday’s planned protest outside of the Jamaican Consulate in Manhattan, New York.
As of late morning, scores of placard-bearing Jamaicans were seen outside the consulate protesting various issues in their homeland, including crime, corruption, poor healthcare services, and participation in elections.
The protesters are demanding greater engagement from the Government with the Diaspora on these pressing issues.
Counter-protesters have also gathered outside the Jamaican Consulate, holding placards with messages such as ‘Jamaica first. Support nation-building’ and ‘Your remittances are not entitlements!’
Earlier this week, Christopher Benjamin, the spokesman for the Jamaican Consulate in New York stated that he did not anticipate significant media attention for the event nor any disruption in the consulate’s operations. However, he emphasised that Consul General Alsion Roach-Wilson maintains a welcoming approach and is willing to discuss issues affecting the community.
The protest on May 10 follows a similar one held in Miami on January 9 this year. Other protest demonstrations are also planned for Washington, DC; Canada; and the United Kingdom.
