Clayton, Forbes win conference titles
KINGSTON, Jamaica— Roschell Clayton of the University of Villanova and Marie Forbes of Clemson University were winners on the opening day of their respective conference outdoor track and field championships on Thursday.
Clayton retained her women’s Big East high jump title with 1.81m, earning her third straight title after also winning indoors in March with teammate Malaika Cunningham placing second (1.73m).
Forbes threw a personal best 67.03m to win her first Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) women’s hammer throw title in her final year.
She beat her previous personal best of 64.91m set last year and is ranked 11th overall in the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).
Daniel Cope, also of Clemson was sixth in the men’s hammer throw with a season best 63.42m.
Meanwhile, D’Andre Anderson of Clemson advanced to the final of the men’s 200m with 20.78 seconds (-1.7m/s), third fastest and Ockera Myrie from the same school also made progress in the women’s 200m with 23.42 seconds (-0.5m/s).
At the Summit League Daniella Anglin of South Dakota was second in the women’s high jump with 1.72m, her first loss in three outdoor championships.
At the South-Eastern Conference (SEC), Brianna Lyston of LSU led the women’s 200m qualifying with a personal best 22.31 seconds (1.0m/s), while Nickisha Pryce of the University of Arkansas, also advanced with 22.75 seconds (0.6m/s).
Two Jamaicans Kimar Farquharson of Texas A&M (1:47.57 seconds) and Tyrese Reid of Mississippi State (1:48.07) both advanced to the men’s 800m final, while Garriel White of LSU made progress to the women’s 400m hurdles final with 57.45 seconds.
