Alleged phone thief to face trial after breaching mediation agreement
ST JAMES, Jamaica – A 53-year-old man who was reportedly captured on camera stealing several iPhones, valued at approximately $2 million, from a Montego Bay business establishment, is set to face trial after breaching the terms of the mediation agreement.
Robert Lawrence, a higgler from Flanker, St James, appeared in the parish court on Wednesday, charged with shop-breaking and larceny.
The parties had on a previous appearance, participated in a mediation session and were able to reach an agreement. It was agreed that Lawrence would make monthly payments of $100,000 to the complainant.
However, when the case was mentioned before presiding judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton on Wednesday, it was revealed that Lawrence did not fulfil his part of the agreement.
“How do you propose to pay this $100,000 per month?” Fairclough-Hylton asked the accused man.
“I am asking you if you can give me some more time to pay,” Lawrence replied.
The judge then informed Lawrence that he had violated the terms of the agreement, and she could not keep the case on the list for two years.
Following a discussion with Lawrence’s legal counsel, Suwayne Phillips, the judge scheduled the case for trial on June 13 and extended Lawrence’s bail until that date.
According to court records, on January 6 about 10:00 am, the complainant received word that his cellular phone repair store located on Queens Drive in Montego Bay, St James, had been broken into.
A subsequent viewing of video footage from the store’s security camera system showed Lawrence smashing the glass to the front door and stealing more than 14 iPhones.
It is further alleged that on February 17 police investigators received a tip and carried out a targeted raid at Lawrence’s residence in Flanker. When cautioned by the authorities Lawrence reportedly said, “Officer, mi nuh know what you talking about.”
He was subsequently taken into custody and formally charged.
