A first win for Benson
IN a bold, front-running effort, the Fitznahum Williams-conditioned
Benson ran rivals into the ground to win the Jamaica Racing Commission Veterinarians’ Trophy on Saturday, April 27, 2024.
The event, a Maiden Condition for native-bred four-year-olds and upward over 6½ furlongs, saw Benson win going away by 15½ lengths. The four-year-old bay colt won in a time of 1:23.0 (24.1 x 49.1 x 1:15.1).
Benson was hustled by leading rider Tevin Foster to lead the pack in the nine-horse field.
Benson led Glittering Magnum (Raddesh Roman), Sir Wong Don (Reyan Lewis), and
Veliki Vicki (Roderick DaCosta) down the backstretch.
Going into the half-mile turn Benson maintained his gallop although Sir Wong Don came with a challenge.
When the field turned for home Benson accelerated and powered home to score easily ahead of Sir Wong Don who had no answers to the calling of the winner in deep stretch.
Dimetry P (Richard Lunan) came home in third place.
Benson is bred by Here Comes Ben out of the Tracking mare First Kiss.
