California Crown — one to watch after debut win
THREE-YEAR-OLD chestnut colt California Crown made an exciting debut at the races on Saturday, April 27, 2024 when he easily brushed aside rivals in a Maiden Condition call for native-bred three-year-olds.
Bred by Hedge Fund out of Dream Big, California Crown scored by 4½ lengths and hit the wire in the 5½-furlong event in a smooth 1:09.3 (23.4 x 48.2).
Ridden by Robert Halledeen, California Crown broke off well, racing in second position behind Blood Moon (Raddesh Roman). California Crown wasted no time surging to the front going into the half-mile turn, ahead of Blood Moon and Bold Move (Omar Walker).
Turning for home for the drive, California Crown, the howling 1-9 favourite, cruised home under a hand ride to win easily. Bold Move was second and Smart Trick (Reyan Lewis) third.
California Crown is bred by Lakeland Farms, owned by Carlton Watson, and trained by Jason DaCosta.
