KSAMC vows to treat vendors with ‘dignity, respect’ amid viral video controversy
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Following recent scrutiny sparked by a resurfaced two-year-old video depicting stalls being destroyed by municipal police, the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) says it is committed to a fresh approach under its new leadership.
In a release on Monday, the KSAMC said that most of the officers seen in the viral video are no longer employed by the organisation and shared that since a new Mayor has taken control of the municipality, it will be revisiting how it communicates with stakeholders, including vendors.
“The Corporation wishes to inform the public that that incident occurred over two years ago under a different administration and while we recognise the challenges faced by our municipal police officers, the KSAMC will revisit our approach to ensure that all our stakeholders- including vendors, are treated with dignity and respect while maintaining public order,” the statement read.
The People’s National Party’s (PNP) Andrew Swaby was elected the new mayor of Kingston after the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) confirmed in February that the party had won the majority of the municipality in the local government elections.
