Forbes wins college championships double at Penn Relays
PHILADELPHIA, USA — Jamaica’s Marie Forbes of Clemson University was a double winner in the college section of the Penn Relays here at Franklin Field, winning the hammer throw and discus throw championships at the weekend.
Forbes was one of three Jamaicans to win an individual college event at the three-day event, including University of Technology, Jamaica’s (UTech) Raymond Richards and the University of Villanova’s Roschell Clayton who won the high jump championships.
Forbes threw a season’s best 63.49m to win the College Women’s Hammer Throw Championship on Thursday and then returned on Saturday to win the College Women’s Discus Throw Championship with 54.15m.
Damali Williams of Hampton University was fifth with 49.86m, Johnelle Johnson of Morgan State was 10th with 45.57m, and Shamella Donaldson of The University of the West Indies, Mona, 12th with 43.80m.
Richards cleared 2.17m to win the College Men’s High Jump Championship, the third in a row by a Jamaican after Romaine Beckford, then of University of South Florida, won the last two times.
Multiple-time Big East champion and Villanova programme record holder Clayton jumped 1.83m to win the College Women’s High Jump Championship, the first Jamaican to win the event, with her teammate Malaika Cunningham placing seventh with 1.65m.
Clemson University’s Courtney Lawrence was second in the College Men’s shot put Championships with 18.92m while Danree Delancy of Howard University was 12th with 16.67m.
Krystal Sloley of UTech finished second in the College Women’s 100m Championship on Saturday, running 11.47 seconds (0.5m/s), while Oneka Wilson of Clemson was also second in the College Women’s 100m Hurdles Championship in 13.17 seconds (0.2m/s).
Shantae Foreman of Clemson was third in the College Women’s Triple Jump Championship with a personal best 12.81m (-1.3m/s) after starting the event just this season.
Former Cornwall College athlete Jordae Wilson of Johnson C Smith University was fourth in the college men’s triple jump with 14.65m (1.0m/s).
Shania Scott of the University of Albany placed fourth in the college women discus throw with 48.25m, while Rochele Solmon of Hampton University was seventh with 45.31m.
Scott was also eighth in the college women’s shot put with a best of 14.15m, Solmon threw 13.34m and Juliet Smith of St Johns University threw 12.43m.
Sean Kalawan of St Augustine was sixth in the College Men’s 400m Hurdles Championship, running 51.68 seconds, and Devontie Archer of the University of South Florida was 12th in 52.76 seconds.
