Revitalise school resource officers
Dear Editor,
How many more children will be injured due to inadequate security? How many more parents will continuously worry about their children’s safety and security while at work?
In October 2023 I recommended in a letter to the editor that implementing adequate school resource officers would assist with mitigating fighting in schools. Again, I implore the Ministry of Education to increase the number of school resource officers and appoint them as special district constables. This will allow them to act within schools and their environs, overseeing students’ safety and disrupting any fights.
I also ask school boards to act effectively. Don’t leave it up to school principals and vice-principals alone to defend themselves.
Within one week, one child was killed and several injured due to unruly behaviour by schoolchildren within the vicinity of their schools. What is the response? Sit and investigate while the fights continue!
The issue at hand will not be solved overnight, but a system needs to be in place.
Relying on the police alone cannot be the solution. It needs to start with the schools and, by extension, the Ministry of Education.
