Man to be sentenced for raping common law wife
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — A High Court judge will on Monday next week sentence a man who has admitted to raping his common law wife in
2018.
The man from Penal, south of here, who cannot be named so as to protect the woman, pleaded guilty on Monday when he appeared virtually before Justice Lisa Ramsumair-Hinds.
The court heard he attacked the woman at their apartment in March 2018. The incident allegedly occurred after the victim sought to intervene when the man came home drunk and had an argument with their landlord over rental arrears.
The couple argued about his actions, during which he threatened to kill her. She contacted the police who came to their apartment and warned him. But shortly after the police officers left the man demanded that she have sex with him. The woman, with whom he has two children, refused as she reminded him that she was still recovering from surgery on her abdomen. But he then pushed her on a mattress and raped her.
