Flags’ own journey to solitude inspires ‘Travelling Man’
Peace of mind means a lot to Flags, a veteran roots singer based in South Florida. Whenever he writes songs, they are usually based on life experience.
Travelling Man, his latest song, is no different. Released in March by Buffalo Records, it tells the story of a wanderer who finds solace after years on the road.
“It’s about a man who finds solitude in travelling and finally comes to a place of consciousness. Me’s a man who been through it, my situation is dat mi can’t change it, so mi live wid it an’ accept my faith,” Flags told the Observer Online.
That “situation” is losing his sight due to glaucoma over 20 years ago. After initial grief, Flags decided to move on and “enjoy life to di fullest”.
Travelling Man is his latest effort for Buffalo Records, a company operated by Neville Thompson out of South Florida. Previous releases for the label include Bossman and World is On Fire.
Originally from Montego Bay, Flags was born Winston Smith. He started singing in his hometown, performing in hotels and clubs like Disco Inferno with the Future Wind band which performed at Reggae Sunsplash in 1979.
Flags has lived in South Florida for over 40 years. After losing his sight, he gave up music but was encouraged to return by producer and fellow Montegonian Courtney “Blemo” Crichton, known for his work with singers White Mice and Screwdriver.
Crichton produced some of Flags’ comeback songs including Praise Jah and Time Tough.
