Asafa Powell supports Jill Stewart MoBay City run
ST JAMES, Jamaica — Former two-time world record holder Asafa Powell has announced his participation in the Jill Stewart MoBay City Run set for Sunday, May, 5, as he urged citizens to support the charity effort.
Powell, who set the 100m world record twice with times under 10.00 seconds, says he and his wife Alyshia, will be honouring the memory of the late Jill Stewart in whose honour the race has been renamed.
“My wife and I are thrilled to stand behind the MoBay City Run, honouring the legacy of Jill Stewart,” Powell is reported to have said in a release from the organisers.
“For us it’s more than a race; it’s a testament to Jill and what she stood for as a mom and to the community of Montego Bay. This is a cause that transcends the finish line. Together, we can make a difference and keep Jill’s spirit alive. We will see you at the starting line, register today and come out to join us, let’s do this, Mobay!”
Meanwhile, chief organiser Janet Silvera told Observer Online they were pleased with the level of entries they had received so far.
Silvera told Observer Online on Tuesday that 45 corporate groups had already confirmed their participation and they are expecting even more before the May 3 close for entries.
“In addition to the group entries that we have received, the individual entries are very encouraging and we anticipate another big turn out,” she said.
