Focused Davison looking to make his mark
After clocking a personal best time in the men’s 100m at Velocity Fest 15 last Saturday, young Jamaican sprinter Sandrey Davison expressed his hunger for further success this season and is setting his sights on making an impact in the event at the National Championships in June.
At 21, Davison, who recently switched from Elite Performance Track Club to the Michael Frater-led Dynamic Track Club, sprinted to a new mark of 10.15 seconds to secure victory in a fiercely competitive field at the meet held at Jamaica College. This time eclipsed his previous best of 10.19 seconds set last year at the National Trials. Emanuel Archibald of Swept Track Club took second place in 10.19, with Javorne Dunkley of Elite Performance coming in third at 10.24.
Reflecting on his performance, Davison expressed satisfaction and attributed his success to what he described as Frater’s rigorous training regimen, which he believes is now bearing fruit.
“It was really a good race for me because I have been training very hard in getting certain things in place; you know that it is a crucial year for many track athletes,” said Davison. “It’s an Olympic year and we have to get ourselves ready for this trial because it is not going to be an easy trial, and so I just have to stay focused and once I do that, then I know that great things will happen for me at the National Trials.”
“I definitely want to win trials this year and so I just have to work harder in training and I am just pushing myself to the limit and not easing off,” Davison said of his lofty ambitions.
The former St Catherine High School standout has drawn comparisons to the legendary Jamaican sprint icon Usain Bolt due to his similar running style and height. He transitioned from high school to the professional ranks with Elite Performance a few years ago, but has so far not lived up to the promise he showed as a junior, due partly to injury setbacks, which significantly disrupted his training schedule.
However, Davison noted that he has overcome his injury woes and is now in peak condition and is focused on achieving even faster times this year.
“I think that I am in the driver’s seat in getting faster, but I am not going to get complacent right now, and so I am going to get back to the drawing board and work harder, get my start together, get my drive phase together also and get my top-end speed sharpened up also,” he stated.
“I am very focused right now and working with Coach Frater; he is a very good coach because he is very humble, patient, and so just look for greatness from me going forward,” Davison added.
Regarding his decision to switch clubs, Davison clarified that it was a personal choice driven by his desire for self-improvement and the pursuit of his career goals.
“There is no conflict or anything like that, it is just my thing for improving myself and seeking better for my future,” Davison stated.
“Last year, I struggled with injuries because I got about two weeks’ worth of training going into Trials and I did get a personal best there, but I took that as a lesson and stepping stone for this season,” he pointed out.
