Sprinter Ackeem Blake claims third in Diamond League opener
A third-place finish by Ackeem Blake and fourth place by Danielle Williams were the highlights for Jamaica at Saturday’s opening Wanda Diamond League meeting in Xiamen, China.
The event marked the first time a Diamond League meet was being held in April, several weeks earlier than usual.
Blake, the World Athletics Indoor Championships 60m bronze medallist, and Williams, the two-time 100m hurdles world champion, stood out as they got their outdoor seasons off on positive notes.
Blake, who got off to a good start, ran a season’s best 10.20 seconds (-0.6m/s) to finish behind Americans Christian Coleman (10.13) and Fred Kerley (10.17).
He made up for last September’s mishap at the same stadium when he fell at the start of the race.
National champion Rohan Watson was fourth in a season’s best 10.27, and former world champion Yohan Blake placed ninth in 10.43.
Williams, who was racing outdoor for the second time this season, clocked a season’s best 12.56 seconds (-0.2m/s) in a quality field. Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn came from behind to win in 12.45, edging World Indoor champion Devynne Charlton (12.49) of The Bahamas. Cyrena Samba-Myela set a French national record 12.55 for third.
Olympic Games bronze medallist Megan Tapper was eighth in 12.88.
Olympic champion Hansle Parchment failed to recover from a slow start and finished sixth in the 110m hurdles in 13.33 in his season opener.
Orlando Bennett was eighth in 13.58 as American Daniel Roberts won in a world-leading 13.11. He beat his compatriot Cordell Tinch (13.16) and Japan’s Shunsuke Izumiya who finished third in 13.17.
Christoff Bryan finished seventh in the men’s high jump in his first Diamond League appearance, clearing 2.20m as American Shelby McEwen won with 2.27m — the same height as World and Olympic champion Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar. Commonwealth Games winner Hamish Kerr of New Zealand placed third with 2.24m.
Danniel Thomas-Dodd was eighth in the women’s shot put with a best mark of 18.76m. China’s Lijiao Gong won with a season’s best 19.72m, beating New Zealand’s Maddison-Lee Wesche who had a personal best 19.63m. World champion Chase Jackson of the United States was third with 19.62m.
