Jamaica’s Lyston moves up in NCAA rankings
JAMAICA’S Brianna Lyston surged to the top of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rankings after winning the 100m and 200m double in wind-aided times at the Louisiana State University (LSU) Alumni Gold track and field meet in Baton Rouge on Saturday.
Lyston ran 22.35 seconds (2.8m/s) to take over first place in the 200m rankings, moving past South Carolina’s JaMeesia Ford. Lyston had earlier moved closer to 100m leader Jacious Sears of University of Tennessee after running 10.84 (2.2m/s).
Alliyah McNeil of University of Minnesota won the women’s high jump with 1.79m, equalling her season’s best. McNeil was second in the long jump with 6.05m (0.5m/s).
Zayne Palomino of University of Southern Mississippi set a new personal-best 2.22m to place second in the men’s high jump, the fifth best in the NCAA. He improved on his 2.17m set earlier this season.
Gizel Clayton of University of Memphis lowered her personal best in the 100m hurdles to 13.29 seconds (1.6m/s) faster than the 13.64 she ran two weeks earlier.
Gariel Whyte of LSU was third in the women’s 400m hurdles in a season’s best 56.88. Terice Steen of New Mexico State was fifth in 58.59 seconds, also a season’s best, while Abigail Schaaffe of University of Minnesota was sixth in 59.48.
Cedricka Williams was at it again as she extended her National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) and Barton County record after she won the women’s discus throw at the Michael Johnson Invitational at Baylor with 57.80m.
She beat the 57.57m she had set a week ago.
Her teammate Christopher Young won the men’s discus throw with 58.28m while another Barton athlete, Ricardo Hayles, was third with 56.87m.
Kavian Kerr of University of Nebraska was third in the men’s long jump with 7.43m (1.4m/s). Rhianna Phipps was second in the women’s triple jump with a wind-aided 12.85m (2.6m/s) as Lotavia Brown placed fourth with 12.77m (2.7m/s). Terol Wilson was second in the men’s triple jump with 15.91m (3.8m/s).
Demar Francis of Baylor finished second in the men’s 400m in 46.59 while Bovel McPherson of New Mexico Junior College was sixth in 47.40 seconds.
At the Virginia Challenge, Roschell Clayton of Villanova won the women’s high jump with 1.80m while her teammate Malaika Cunningham was seventh with 1.67m.
On Friday, former Cornwall College athlete Lansford Cunningham, of Division 2 Tusculum, set three personal bests at the Catamount Classic, hosted by Western Carolina University.
He extended his school record in the long jump, winning with 7.14m, up from 6.96m. He also had jumps of 7.07m and 6.99m in the series.
He ran 10.66 to qualify for the men’s 100m final on Saturday. He clocked 10.88 in the final and also ran 21.66 in the 200m.
