Jamaica’s ice hockey team turns tables on Lebanon
JAMAICA’S senior ice hockey team defeated Lebanon on Saturday and has now won two out of their first three matches in the Challenger Cup Series in Chicago, United States.
They are scheduled to play their final match in the series on Sunday, April 21 against Puerto Rico.
On Thursday night the team lost to Lebanon with an 11-6 scoreline. The team had just one practice session prior to the match. It was Jamaica’s first loss to Lebanon, and the team was missing one key player in Ethan Finlason who arrived during the match.
Scorers for Jamaica were Co-Captain Taos Jordan who scored a hat-trick, Maleek McGowan, Amari Sellars and Co-Captain Josh Mitton.
In the second match played Friday night Jamaica defeated Puerto Rico 6-3, with Jordan again registering a hat-trick of goals, and Ethan Finlason, Josh Mitton and Quinn Checers rounding out the scorers.
Jamaica trailed 0-1 at the end of the first of three periods but went into a 5-1 lead at the end of the second, and held on for its first victory.
Goalkeeper Moriyah Tulloch, who had an off night on Thursday, turned in a brilliant performance Friday night, saving 34 of the 37 shots from Puerto Rico.
The team played Lebanon again Saturday morning and turned the tables, winning 7-6.
The Challenger Cup Series is being played in Chicago, then New York, and will culminate in Toronto, Canada, in July.
The team is expected to be strengthened for the other legs by the addition of some of its more senior players who were not available for the Chicago leg.
