Spotlight on Delano Forbes, CEO of Phase 3 productions
DELANO Forbes is a production mogul who spearheads one of Jamaica’s leading television and multimedia production companies, Phase 3 Productions. Having grown up in the family business, he has successfully taken over the reins as chief executive officer, following the passing of his father Richard Forbes. With an extensive knowledge of production, owing to his extensive exposure to the industry, coupled with his years of studies at NYU Film School and Florida International University, and his abundance of professional experiences; he brings a modern perspective to the daily operations of the business.
Q: How would you describe your leadership style?
A: I would describe my leadership style as primarily democratic. It is important for one to value the input of all team members when making decisions. In order for businesses to grow, we have to grant our employees the autonomy to carry out tasks, empowering them to take initiative and make decisions independently. This also allows them to learn and develop their skills, and sharpen their decision-making abilities, which will positively impact their life outside of work. I trust in their ability to contribute effectively towards achieving our common objectives and staying true to the company’s vision, so that we continue to grow and achieve more milestones.
Q: What is the biggest business obstacle that you’ve had to overcome?
A:
It is oftentimes difficult to share and communicate my vision and expectations with everyone at all levels within the company. That could be on a project by project basis, or even the bigger picture as a whole. There’s also the issue of capacity building while scaling and maintaining the excellent service we’ve provided for years, at both the international and local levels. A large part of that is acquiring and managing a team that is capable of meeting the demands of the company’s growth. As leaders, the onus is on us to adequately train our employees, and trust that they will ably carry out their tasks with the knowledge afforded to them.
Q: What is your vision for Phase 3 Productions?
A: There’s a lot that we’re working towards achieving within the next few years. My ultimate vision for Phase 3 Productions, however, is to become the premier provider of event and broadcast production services for leading global brands on the local and international stage. I aim to align our services closely with our clients’ brand identity, mission, and expectations, ensuring that we not only meet but exceed their visions, providing them with world-class services.
Q: What are some life lessons you’ve learnt as you’ve got older?
A: One of the best things about growing older is the wisdom that comes with it. There are many lessons I’ve learnt over the years; however, there are a few that stand out. The world is remarkably interconnected. As a result of this, we have to emphasise the importance of integrity, accountability and trustworthiness in all interactions, because you never know who is connected to who and what. Secondly, keeping one’s word and showing respect to everyone is paramount. Everyone is deserving of respect, regardless of their career and social status. Recognising and appreciating the value of every individual within the ecosystem, whichever industry you’re in, is a fundamental principle that has shaped my approach to work.
Q: Who do you look to for inspiration and mentorship?
A: As someone in the production industry, I have to say Elon Musk. His innovative mindset has revolutionised multiple industries, resulting in immense growth and stability of these industries. Similarly, I have total admiration for the late ‘Butch’ Stewart. His tenacity, marketing prowess, relatability, and dedication to the business and tourism landscape of Jamaica was next to none and is commendable.
Q: What has kept you going in your industry at such a steady pace?
A: The dynamic nature of the industry keeps me motivated and prevents complacency. It’s also a learning environment as the production industry undergoes constant changes and daily challenges. So while we are apt with foundation knowledge, it’s also a case of learning as we go, because it is an ever-evolving industry. I’ve learnt that there is absolutely no room to get too comfortable.
Q: As the company celebrates 40 years, what are you looking forward to the most?
A: I’m most excited about taking Phase 3 to new heights. My father had a vision for the company, and my goal is to see that vision and all his dreams come to life. I look forward to witnessing our growth as we leverage technology to produce even more spectacular event and broadcast productions. Additionally, I’m eager to showcase Jamaica’s skill on a global stage, exporting our expertise and putting our country on the map, as leaders in the live event and production industry.
