German museum worker hangs his own painting for career boost, gets fired instead
MUNICH, Germany — A technical employee at the Pinakothek der Moderne museum in Germany was reportedly fired after he hung his 2-by-4-foot drawing among the institution’s modern art collection earlier this year.
The incident happened in late February and would see the aspirant’s work briefly affixed among those from Pablo Picasso and German expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.
Speaking with The Washington Post, museum spokesperson Tine Nehler said that along with the removal “at short notice” of his work, the employee was also banned from the museum until further notice and his employment discontinued.
Noting that the museum’s displays were carefully curated, Nehler told The Washington Post that“It is no fun to simply hang one’s own work as a ‘disruptor’.”
She said that while employees may have a high level of identification with their place of work, they must comply with security concepts and must not jeopardise valuable cultural assets, the report said.
