Waterhouse, MBU chase final JPL play-off spot today
THE final play-off spot in the Wray & Nephew Jamaica Premier League (JPL) competition will be determined this afternoon as sixth-placed Waterhouse and seventh-placed Montego Bay United (MBU) aim to secure victory and advance to the last six of the tournament.
Waterhouse, who are experiencing a fluctuating season, will host strugglers Harbour View, in 12th place, at Drewsland Stadium. MBU faces a tough test against second-placed team Tivoli Gardens at Montego Bay Sports Complex.
Both Waterhouse and MBU are tied on 40 points, with Waterhouse edging ahead due to their superior six-goal difference. Both teams boast identical records of 11 wins, seven draws, and seven defeats heading into today’s final preliminary-round game.
Waterhouse Head Coach Marcel Gayle is confident in his team’s ability to secure all three points and advance to the play-offs.
“This match is pivotal for us as one of the most important of the season, and we hold our destiny in our own hands,” he said. “We just need to go out there and secure all three points. The players are eager for this game; they have no choice but to execute the game plan and play quality football.”
Gayle, however, cautioned against underestimating Harbour View despite their poor form this season.
“Harbour View is a quality team with talented players,” he said. “They have been scoring goals and are former Premier League champions so I anticipate a good performance from them.”
Waterhouse enters the contest fresh off a 3-0 victory over Molynes United in their last game.
MBU approaches today’s match against Tivoli Gardens at home with confidence, following their 3-0 win over Harbour View in their last game. They rely on Owayne Gordon — who scored two goals in their previous game — along with Rasheed Brown, Jean Ferreira, Deverow McKenzie, and Brian Brown to lead their charge to victory. Mount Pleasant lead the standings with 56 points, ahead of Tivoli Gardens and Cavalier on 51 each, and Portmore United and Arnett Gardens on 46 each.
