Never forget God’s sacrificial love for all of us
Jesus has gone to heaven to prepare a home for all of us. He wants all of us to be with Him in His heavenly home. He even says, “I will dine with you and be with you as the servants of my people”. Though He has gone to prepare a home for us in His many mansions, He sends forth the Holy Spirit, the third person of the blessed Trinity, to set fire in our hearts so that we will bring the love of God to one another.
Sometimes we forget the poorest of the poor. Now, let’s get back to Jesus’ call to bring good news to the poor. This is the time of the Holy Spirit! Our father and creator made our marvellous world of seas, rivers and mountains, animals and fish, plants and trees to satisfy our human needs. That’s the work of our father and creator.
Because we were selfish in caring for and loving one another, He sends Jesus to rescue us lest we lose the reward of God’s heavenly home that He has prepared for us. Jesus said, “Bring good news to the poor, share your talents and the many gifts I have given you, mostly, love one another as I have loved you!”
Jesus Christ is the second person of the blessed Trinity. He comes to rescue us from selfishness, lest we perish and die. This only son of the Father taught us how to serve one another by His great example of love and care. Then He died for us to show the world His enormous love and sacrifice of His life for all of us.
But He sent forth His Holy Spirit. His Spirit will always be with us; the Holy Spirit is the advocate of Christ. The Spirit of Christ will teach us about the sacrificial love of God for us and our call to love one another.
We cannot forget the word of God nor can we forget His deeds. Within our souls there is a temple of the Holy Spirit, which contains memories, imaginations and experiences of God’s call to us to be sanctified and to sanctify the world with His life.
The Holy Spirit came down upon Ferdie Mahfood, Fr Gregory Ramkissoon and myself, it was the Spirit of love for the poor which moved Christ and moved all three of us. “I have come to bring good news to the poor, to feed the hungry, to give water to the thirsty, to clothe the naked, to care for the homeless and destitute, the orphans and the widows. All three of us were brought together at Eventide and South Camp Rehabilitation for prisoners who were thought to be guilty of gun crimes. Jesus Christ commanded myself, the brothers, and Mahfood to attend to them.
Eventide was the most repulsive, forgotten, poor, wounded and unattractive of people. South Camp Rehabilitation was the most frightening collection of men
— dangerous and unpredictable. These were rejected by the society but were the ones that Jesus wanted us to care for. We had to attend to them. This was the calling of Pentecost for all of us. We said we would do the will of God. There was no turning back; there is no meaning in life but to serve these most forgotten ones. That happening in Jamaica was the most powerful and deep calling of the Holy Spirit. It was the birth of the Church of the poor, in me and the Missionaries of the Poor in Jamaica in 1981.
Since then, all three of us have gone in slightly different ways, but we are all inspired by the Holy Spirit. I pray that the Lord will continue to bless us so that we can continue to spread the vision of God’s love for the poor.
At this Easter time, I give thanks to God for my Jamaican people. We will pray with over 5,000 people, we will visit prisoners, we will sing and dance with them and dine with hundreds of poor in our homes and people from the streets. There will be enough food due to the kindness of Jamaican people in giving so much bun and cheese, rice and peas, fish and bread, chicken and drinks.
