Midwife’s dream restored
Dear Claudienne,
I live in St James and I am a registered nurse. In August 2021, I started to do the western campus UTech Post Basic Midwifery programme. The programme was slated to last two years and I should have graduated in November 2023 with a Midwifery degree. However, in October 2023, the vice-dean informed me that I would not be allowed to graduate as I had three outstanding modules that I had not completed. They were College Mathematics, University Elective and Academics Reading & Writing.
Although I was told that I could do the three outstanding courses in semester 2 (January 2024) I was only able to do the face-to-face College Mathematics course. Although UTech did not offer the Western UTech College Maths course for Midwifery in January (semester 2), the Western UTech college requested the Kingston UTech office to manually add me to the Maths face-to-face class being done by students doing the business course at the Western campus.
I have been attending the Maths classes since January and have even done the mid-semester exam. I could not do the two online courses — University Elective and Academics Reading & Writing — because when I go on the portal to select the outstanding modules, I get an error message that states that I have not reached the minimum required modules to register.
I went to the Admissions Department on February 16, 2024, to try to sort out the problem and was assured that my registration process would be completed by February 21, 2023. The dean provided me with an email address for the UTech officer in Kingston who I was to contact if the courses were not reflected on my portal on February 21, and I sent an email to the officer. To date she has not acknowledged receipt of my email.
The lecturer for the College Mathematics class at the western campus also sent an email to the Kingston campus that requested that I be added to the class. I have also sent emails regarding my issues to the head of school, dean, the vice-dean and the programme director for Midwifery but up to now I have not received a clear response and my issues have not been resolved.
Your assistance will be appreciated.
