12 killed in road crashes last week – RSU
Twelve people were killed in motor vehicle crashes during the week ending Friday, April 5 as the carnage continues unabated on the nation’s roads.
The most recent victims include three people from the Thompson Pen community in St Catherine who perished in a four-vehicle bang-up on the Roaring River main road in St Ann on April 3.
A six-year-old boy and three females are also numbered among the dead according to the latest statistics released on Friday by the Island Traffic Authority’s Road Safety Unit (RSU).
Last week’s victims include two motorcyclists, three private motor car drivers, three passengers of private motor cars, one pedestrian, one pillion rider and the driver of a commercial motor vehicle.
The RSU is reporting that 112 people have been killed in 96 fatal crashes since the start of the year. It is also reporting that fatal crashes have decreased by five per cent while fatalities are down two per cent when compared to the corresponding period in 2023.
Overall, the RSU said fatalities for 2024 are projected to decrease by two per cent when compared with 2023.
Up to April 5, pedestrians accounted for 16 per cent of the road fatalities since the start of the year, motorcyclists accounted for 36 per cent, private motor vehicle drivers accounted for 18 per cent and passengers of private motor vehicles accounted for 13 per cent.
