Road authorities conduct operation in St Mary; traffic accidents down in parish
ST MARY, Jamaica – The St Mary Highway Patrol and traffic team along with the Transport Authority on Friday conducted a joint operation in Port Maria and Highgate, two of the major towns in the parish, in an effort to enforce the proper use of the roadways.
Acting Commanding officer for the parish, Deputy Superintendent of Police Kevin Francis told Observer Online that the operation was deemed a success with 50 of 68 motor vehicles stopped being issued tickets, while one car was seized and 25 summons issued.
“The operation with its stakeholders is to serve, protect, reassure citizens in the parish and encourage motorists to obey the road code, especially the speed limit,” Francis said.
St Mary since the start of 2024 has recorded three road fatalities and 53 collisions, a decline in both categories from the January to March period last year when the parish recorded 115 collisions with five deaths.
