Mullings takes over discus world lead with big 69.67m throw
Ralford Mullings threw a massive personal best and world leading 69.67m to win the men’s discus throw competition hosted by Seal Throws Club at Throw Town Ramona in Oklahoma, USA on Saturday.
With the feat, he became the second Jamaican man to achieve the Olympic standard in the event.
Mullings, whose previous personal best was 65.39m set in April 2022, when he was a freshman at Arizona State University, is now second on the Jamaican all-time list only behind Fedrick Dacres’ national record 70.78m set in June 2019.
The former Kingston College athlete, who also attended the University of Arkansas but is now registered at the University of Oklahoma, joins Traves Smikle as the Jamaican men who have made the 67.20m standard to qualify for the Olympic Games set to be held in Paris this summer.
His throw passes Smikle’s 67.83m for the world lead that was set on March 9.
Mullings was sixth on the Jamaican charts prior to Saturday and moved past Chad Wright (66.54m), Smikle (68.14m), former national record holder Jason Morgan (68.19m) and Roje Stona (68.64m) in the all-time rankings.
