Three-from-three for Funcaandun on local soil
Three -year-old American-bred bay colt Funcaandun continued to show significant development as he advanced to the Overnight Allowance level unbeaten, winning three races in as many starts on local soil.
Funcaandun completed his hat-trick of success on Saturday, March 30, 2024, after winning a Restricted Stakes contest that included imported three-year-olds and upward (non-winners of three) and native-bred three-year-olds and four-year-olds (non-winners of four) travelling 7 furlongs.
With Shamaree Muir riding for owner Carlton Watson and trainer Jason DaCosta,
Funcaandun won the race by a length and three-quarters in a time of 1:27.1 (24.0 x 46.2 x 1:12.1).
Watson, who was excited about the win by Funcaandun, said that his development should continue in class.
“The performance by Funcaandun was wonderful. I mean, he is improving; he is a nice foreigner; and he is a nice colt. All of his wins so far have been impressive.
“It was also an awesome run to finish in a time of 1:27.1 on a dead track,” Watson told the
Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
He added, “I was never worried during the race. We have been training him to run, and he did in the workout last week, and he did exactly what the jockey asked him to do today. We are going to take it one day at a time. He is now in the Overnight Allowance Company, and we will see how he goes from here on.”
Funcaandun surged away at the start and took the early lead over Wall Street Trader (Jerome Innis) and Norblar (Ruja Lahoe).
Funcaandun continued to hold the advantage down the backstretch until the half-mile bend when Wall Street Trader stormed to the lead, opening up on the field with each stride.
Wall Street Trader took a commanding lead into the final furlong, then Funcaandun found his stride, pulling away for a decisive victory inside the final furlong of the race and erupted like a cannon ball on fire to win.
Wall Street Trader finished second, while Fred the Great (Robert Halledeen) earned third place.
