Jamaica Invitational meet gets continental tour silver status
The Jamaica Athletics Invitational (JAI), set for Saturday, May 11 at the National Stadium by the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA), is to be a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver event, it was announced on Wednesday.
The meet, is expected to feature 14 key events for elite athletes from Jamaica, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, is expected to last for about two and half hours. It is to feature some of the top Jamaican and international athletes who will be preparing for the Olympic Games to be held in Paris this summer.
“Fans will be in for a treat with some of the world’s best on show. Jamaica’s dominance in the world is unquestionable and we are intent on putting on a great show as hosts,” chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Ludlow Watts, was quoted in a JAAA release.
The organisers, in anticipation of a packed venue, said the events to be contested include 100m, 200m, 400m, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, discus throw, high jump, and triple jump for men. On the women’s side they have listed 100m, 200m, 400m, 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles and triple jump events.
Among the accomplishments the JAAA promised to bring “quality competition to the fans, provide a platform for athletes to compete, and promote Jamaica as a sport destination”.
