DJ Kevy ready to make his mark at Jamaica Carnival
KINGSTON, Jamaica- Even though he studies at the University of Technology (Utech), DJ Kevy has managed to carve a niche for himself as an in-demand DJ on the soca music scene.
His recent sets at UWI Carnival and the GenXS Pump series, saw DJ Kevy unleashing the latest soca treats while leaving patrons musically satisfied.
As the carnival season winds down, DJ Kevy who has struck an undeniable chord with the younger soca music demographic, will unleash his musical artistry at this week’s major events GenXS Jouvert and GenXS Road March.
“Music for me began as young as my primary school days in the household. My older brother played different genres of music, so I was inspired from an early age. However, my DJ aspect began after fooling around with a virtual DJ. I got more into it, and I learnt the art of mixing,” said DJ Kevy.
He cites international DJs including Calvin Harris and David Guetta and local DJs such as Kurt Riley and ZJ Chrome as his go-to DJs for musical inspiration.
“I was in the fifth form at Wolmer’s when I realised that I was gaining all the skills of being a DJ and I had all of this knowledge and people were approaching me to play at their events. So, it was then I said, you know what, let’s make this a career,” DJ Kevy explained.
The first event that he played professionally as DJ Kevy (his real name is Kevon Reynolds) was at the popular Wolmer’s Barbeque event.
Said DJ Kevy “Music is a driving force for me. Music is life and it’s one of the greatest artforms. Music also gets me through the hardships.”
He shared that the biggest event that he has played at thus far is the GenXS Jouvert in 2023.
“What I enjoy most about being a DJ is realising the effect that you have on people through music. Being the individual who can be the source of release for people, some come to the event with their problems, and for others it’s just an escape,” said DJ Kevy.
