PNP extends condolences on passing of distinguished Caribbean legal minds
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The People’s National Party (PNP), is extending condolences to the families, colleagues, and loved ones of the late Justice Désirée Bernard and the late Justice Michael de la Bastide.
The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ’s) first President, de la Bastide, passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 86, while on Thursday, retired CCJ Judge, Justice Désirée Bernard, died at age 85.
In a release on Saturday, the PNP said Justice Désirée Bernard’s pioneering accomplishments as the first female Chief Justice of Guyana and Chancellor of the Judiciary of Guyana, left an indelible mark on the legal landscape.
“Her steadfast dedication to justice and tireless advocacy for gender equality have significantly advanced the cause of human rights and equality in the Caribbean and beyond,” the statement read.
It also expressed that similarly, Justice Michael de la Bastide’s tenure as the first President of the Caribbean Court of Justice “exemplifies his unparalleled commitment to upholding the rule of law.”
“His profound expertise and unwavering dedication have not only shaped legal discourse in the Caribbean but have also inspired generations of legal professionals to strive for excellence in the pursuit of justice,” the release said.
