Mamma Mia hands Osorio first win on local soil
Panamanian jockey Josue Osorio booted home his first winner on local soil aboard four-year-old chestnut filly Mamma Mia in the 15th staging of the $1.25-million King’s Plate feature race at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
Bred by S&D Stables, owned by Carlton Watson, and trained by Jason DaCosta,
Mamma Mia made one get up to win the Overnight Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward over seven and a half furlongs by an easy length and a quarter.
Mamma Mia (Soul Warrior – Princess Geeta) stopped the clocked in a smooth 1:35.0 (24.2 x 48.0 x 1:13.0).
Mamma Mia led the race from the start, followed by Provocativa (Ramon Nepare),
Get A Pepsi (Paul Francis), and Money Monster (Shavon Townsend) down the backstretch. Not playing the waiting game, Osorio urged Mamma Mia into the half-mile bend, and the chestnut filly picked up the pace and widened her lead over opponents running the turn.
Mamma Mia led the field into the lane at a brisk pace, and despite appearing to be tired at the conclusion of the race, she maintained her gallop until the finish line.
Get A Pepsi finished second, and All For Love (Sadiki Blake) came in third place.
Meanwhile, current leading rider Tevin Foster rode three winners on the 10-race card.
Foster’s winners included Oasis Jak, who won Division One of the Grooms’ Association of Jamaica Trophy over the five furlong (1,000m) straight. Trained by Rohan Crichton,
Oasis Jak won the race by four lengths ahead of Chez Le-Vee (Reyan Lewis) and Acknowledgeme (Ramon Nepare) in a time of 58.3.
His other winners were Kingswood in the first race for trainer Ryan Darby and Undecided for trainer Steven Todd in the day’s third race.
Division Two of the Grooms’ Association of Jamaica Trophy was won by the Patrick Lynch-trained California Gold, ridden by Ramon Nepare. California Gold defeated James (Josue Osorio) by a neck on the line in a time of 59.3.
Racing continues Easter Monday with a 10-race programme featuring the $2.5-million Viceroy Trophy.
