Holt, Smith added to Carifta Games team
MUSCHETT High’s Osmond Holt and St Jago High’s Kimeka Smith will be added to the Jamaica team that will participate in the 51st staging of the Carifta Games set for Kirani James Athletics Stadium in St George’s, Grenada, from Saturday to Monday.
Their addition comes after performances at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships last week.
Holt, who was third in the decathlon, will participate in the octathlon and Smith, who won the heptathlon, will take part in the seven-discipline event as well.
St Jago’s Shannia Campbell was withdrawn from the team and was replaced by her teammate Adora Campbell for the Under-17 Girls’ 200m.
Shannia had placed second in the Under-17 Girls’ 200m at Carifta Trials held three weeks ago while Adora was third, behind Wolmer High School for Girls’ Natrece East.
Holt, who is the third athlete from Muschett High on the team, joining Johan-Ramaldo Smythe and Shanoya Douglas, was third in the decathlon, thanks in part to a strong run in the 1500m. He clocked 4:51.86 minutes to beat William Knibb Memorial’s Kemal Benjamin (4:52.61), finishing with 5450 points, just four points ahead of Wolmers Boys’ Malique Graham who finished with 5664 points.
Jamaica College’s Trinidadian national Dorian Charles retained his title with 6954 points while Kingston College’s Rayvon Walkin of the Turks and Caicos was second with 5793 points.
Smith won the heptathlon with 4582 points, just ahead of Rhodes Hall High’s Rhianna Lewis (4387), with Holmwood Technical’s Julissia Knight third on 4314 points.
