DaJourney addresses mental illness with ‘Mood Swing’
As a man of faith, gospel singer DaJourney says presenting songs that reflect the tenets of Christianity are important, even when the topic is sensitive. He found himself in that position as he worked on Mood Swing, his latest song.
Released in January, the self-produced track addresses mental illness and the pain it brings to individuals and families. It is a grief the Toronto-based artiste has witnessed, and felt it was appropriate to project in a genuine way.
“Writing this song and truly expressing what I feel on most days, or in most situations was humbling, and honest. I got a chance to speak my truth without making it seem like I have all the answers, because your truth does not have to have the solution, but it puts you on a journey to find peace. It was always important to me, to have honesty in my lyrics, as I portray the goodness of God and the path God takes me on,” he said.
Mood Swing’s poignant message is enhanced by a video in which DaJourney’s character shares his psychological struggles with a focus group. He hopes the song and visual encourage persons facing similar challenges to seek professional help.
DaJourney, who is from West Kingston, collaborates with likeminded artistes in Canada, the United States and Jamaica. Last year, he produced Conquest, the debut EP from deejay Prince Saj. He also won a Sterling Gospel Award for the song Sweet Eeh with singjay Sone G.
“Well, as my abilities have made it, I am a record producer, mixing engineer, and a label owner with two artistes signed to DaJourneyProduction. I have the opportunity also to play a vital role in the past and upcoming works of some of our major and upcoming artistes,” he said. “For myself as an artiste, I started with honesty, and I intend to continue that way.”
