Rose, Glasgow take 400m quinella for KC
The purple and white colours of Kingston College (KC) rained inside the National Stadium on Thursday, as Marcinho Rose led home a one-two for in the final of the Class One 400m at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships yesterday.
Rose, 18, who has been in impressive form this season, clocked a personal best time of 45.93 seconds to take gold ahead of his teammate Amal Glasgow, who clocked 46.85s, while Jamaica College’s (JC) Omary Robinson took bronze in 46.92s.
“I am feeling overjoyed at the moment because this is what I have been training for all season and to come here and win the gold medal, I must give God thanks for that,” Rose said. “I am also very happy for my teammate, Amal, because we both trained very hard for this and I am know that our supporters are very proud of our performances.”
Excelsior’s Demarco Bennett shocked the field to take the gold in Class Two in 46.91 ahead of the favourite Nickecoy Bramwell of Calabar (47.39s) and Jabari Matheson of William Knibb (47.40s). St Jago’s Rushaine Richards captured the gold in Class Three in a personal best time of 49.54s, in front of JC’s pair of Oneil Lawrence (50.11s) and Kyle Thompson (51.07s).
Glasgow and Rose lead all qualifiers into today’s semi-finals of the Class One 200m with times of 21.43s and 21.48s respectively. Zachary Cox of Cornwall College (21.52s), Omar James of Vere (21.61s), Sawyane Kerr of St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) (21.66s), Dejaun Grant of JC (21.75s), Gary Card of Wolmer’s (21.83s) and Romario Hines of Munro (21.84s) are the other main qualifiers in the semi-finals today.
Jabari Matheson of William Knibb topped the qualifiers for today’s semi-finals in Class Two, winning his heat in 21.88s on Thursday.
In the field, JC’s produced an impressive performance to win the Class One discus with a best mark of 65.48m. Chad Hendricks of Munro took silver with a mark of 56.90m, while Calabar’s Delano Lawrence copped the bronze with an effort of 56.77m.
Nikaro Johnson of St Jago captured the gold medal in the Class Three high jump competition with a leap of 1.87m. KC’s Stesean Hurd copped the silver with a mark of 1.84m while the bronze went to Desjuan Lewis of St Mary High, who leapt 1.75m.
Johan-Ramaldo Smythe of Muschett clocked 22.08s, followed by Malique Dennis of JC (22.24s), Malike Nugent of Excelsior (22.26s), Ian Barker of St Catherine (22.35s), Joshua Grant of KC (22.39s), Nasir McMorris of Campion College (22.46s), Orando Pine of Edwin Allen (22.56s), Byron Walker of Calabar (22.34s), and Tavaine Stewart of Herbert Morrison (22.45s) rounded off the top 10 qualifiers for the semifinals.
In Class Three, KC’s Jason Pitter leads all qualifiers into today’s semi-finals after winning his heat in 22.65s. Ched Brown of Calabar secured the second-fastest time of 22.90s. Wolmer’s Mario Ross, who clinched the gold medal in the 100m on Wednesday, also secured his place in the semifinals in 22.95s. Other top qualifiers for today’s semifinals include Jamanie Hylton of STETHS (23.05s), Anthony Drummond of Cornwall College (23.46s), Brandon Bennett of KC (23.51s), and Oneil Lawrence of JC (23.59s).
The top eight qualifiers for today’s semi-finals of the Class Three 800m are Renento Alexander of STETHS (2:05.58 minutes), Cavel Nooks of JC (2:06.56), Obrian Clarke of Calabar (2:10.77), Keniel Daniels of Excelsior (2:10.98), Luke Plummer of Sydney Pagon (2:11.43), Camron Williams of JC (2:12.62,) Ratieo Walter and Jermaine Swaby, both of Titchfield (2:05.83) and (2:08.53).
