Hydel first-timer Abigail Campbell ‘very happy’ with golden impact
Abigail Campbell’s first appearance at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships in the Hydel High blue was a golden one as she ran a personal best 52.27 seconds to win the Girls’ Class One 400m at the National Stadium on Thursday.
After missing last season because she transferred from Ferncourt High — where she had won two gold medals — Campbell was in imperious form as she dominated the competition. She beat the Edwin Allen High pair of Tony-Ann Beckford (53.22) and Natasha Fox who took the bronze with 54.48.
“I am very happy, very happy. This is my first time representing Hydel High and I won, so I am happy,” she told the Jamaica Observer.
“I am happy for myself and, of course, for my mother as well.”
She added she had been hoping to go as fast as “maybe 51 seconds” in the race which saw her jump to number four in the World Athletics Under-20 rankings.
Muschett High’s Shanoya Douglas dominated the Class 2 final, winning in 53.03, her fourth race since the championships started on Tuesday. Her time was just shy of her personal best 52.96 set on Wednesday.
As she had done in the two previous rounds in the 400m, Douglas took the race by the scruff of the neck at the 250-metre mark and ran away from the field as Edwin Allen’s Kelly Ann Carr, who was fourth last year, took the silver with 53.58. Hydel High’s Nastassia Fletcher was third in 53.98.
Jody-Ann Daley of Hydel High, who won last year, finished outside the medal places in fourth in 55.24.
Hydel High’s Sashana Johnson ran a personal best 54.59 to win the Class 3 final, beating Holmwood Technical’s Tracey-Ann Evans (55.28) and Port Antonio High’s Kevina Bourne was third in 56.78, all new lifetime best marks.
In arguably the best performance of the championships so far, Hydel High’s Zavien Bernard broke the Class 3 high jump record with a clearance of 1.83m, breaking the 1.80m set in 2018 by Shantae Foreman, then of Excelsior High.
In a masterclass demonstration, Bernard who was winning the title in back-to-back years, had one failure, at 1.68m. She needed one attempt to clear 1.81m then improved the new mark to 1.83m again on her first attempt.
St Catherine High’s Gabriella Treasure was second with 1.68m with Immaculate Conception’s Grace-Ann Bailey taking third with 1.65m.

East’s 24.85 (-0.8m/s) was good enough for third best in Class 3 as St Jago High’s Shannia Campbell ran 24.76 (0.2m/s) to lead the way, followed by Kevina Bourne of Port Antonio High who ran 24.77 (-0.6m/s).
