Encouraging run by Shany Star
Lawrence Freemantle’s Shany Star found the winning post in front in her second career start, dictating the pace throughout and drawing away for a comfortable win in the Harry Jaghai Memorial Trophy on Saturday, March 16, 2024.
Bred by Savoy Stomp out of Gentle Officer, Shany Star easily won the maiden condition race for native-bred three-year-olds over 6 ½ furlongs by 8 ½ lengths in a time of 1:22.1 (24.4 x 50.1 x 1:15.2) when hitting the wire under jockey Tevin Foster.
Shany Star, running with first-time Lasix, shot to the front at the off, holding a slim lead ahead of Paper Work (Dane Dawkins), Brownie Brown (Robert Halledeen), and Rock-Ola (Phillip Parchment) down the backstretch.
Going into the half-mile (800-metre) turn, Shany Star upped the tempo on rivals and held a significant lead over competitors entering the drive.
First-timer Captain Sparrow (Raddesh Roman) gave it his best shot in the final stages of the race to close for second place. Brenda Boy (Linton Steadman) came home in third place.
“This was her second start, and she did well for the win. She only had one five-furlong gallop coming into the race, and she won good,” Freemantle told the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
“She has scope for improvement, and she always moves nicely at exercise as well, but on last she ran and bled and finished fourth, but that was a five and a half-furlong race, and it was just an introduction.
“She got a little bit more serious today. She moves on to non-winners of two, and so we have to take it one step at a time with her. I can always manage a good horse, so I mean, once you give me a good horse, I can deliver,” Freemantle added.
