Terrelonge, Baker untouchable in 100m finals
Edwin Allen High’s Thieanna Lee Terrelonge won the Class Two Girls’ 100m at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium last night, running a personal best 11.22 seconds (0.5m/s).
After two breathtaking runs in the first round and again in the semi-finals yesterday, the expectations were high that Kevona Davis’s 11.16 seconds record set in 2018 could be under threat.
Despite being pushed all the way by Lacovia High’s Sabrina Dockery (11.36s) and St Jago High’s Briana Campbell, who was third with (11.48s), Terrelonge had to be satisfied with her third gold in the event after winning at Classes Three and Four previously.
Hydel High’s Alliah Baker won the Class One 100m in a personal best 11.34s (1.4m/s), coming from behind to surge to the front after 75m to beat Edwin Allen’s Jounee Arsmstrong (11.52s), with Wolmer’s Girls’ Mickayla Gardner third in 11.59s.
Favourite Natrece East of Wolmer’s Girls duly obliged in the Class Three final, winning with a lifetime best 11.42s (1.1m/s). Adora Campbell of St Jago High was second in 11.52 seconds and Edwin Allen’s Kerelle Etienne took the bronze in 11.73s.
Hydel High had a second gold in the 100m when Teixiera Johnson won the Class Four event in a personal best 11.87s (0.8m/s), beating Mickayla Gardener of Wolmers Girls (12.27s) and Rihanna Scott of Ferncourt High (12.31s).
As expected, St Jago High’s Kimeka Smith smashed the Girls Class Two shot put record when she threw 16.44m to defend her title.
Smith beat the previous best 15.99m set in 2018 by Immaculate Conception’s Danielle Sloley as second placed Marla-Kay Lampart of Clarendon College was also over the old record with 16.02m. St Jago High’s Rehanna Biggs was third with 14.61m.
Rickeisha Simms of Edwin Allen High took the Class One Girls’ 1,500m, running 4:30.36 minutes to take the gold medal. Cindy Rose of Holmwood Technical took the silver in 4:32.79, with Kaydeen Johnson of Hydel taking the bronze in 4:33.71.
Ashara Frater of Vere Technical won the Class Two gold in 4:42.76, ahead of Holmwood Technical’s Jovi Rose (4:43.59) and Rhodonna Prince of Bellefield High was third in 4:49.19 .
Alphansus Davis High’s Alikay Reynolds won the Class Three event in 4:43.92, beating Denique Palmer of Edwin Allen (4:44.37) with Dallia Fairweather of St Mary High (4:46.74) taking third.
Today, the 400m finals are expected to provide fireworks, especially in Class Two, where Muschett High’s Shanoya Douglas has set the pace with back-to-back personal best runs, clocking a superb 52.96s in Wednesday’s semi-finals after running 53.39s in the first round on Tuesday.
Jody-Ann Daley of Hydel High will be seeking to defend her title, however, and ran 53.63s yesterday while Edwin Allen High’s Kellyann Clarke, who was fourth last year, returned 53.40 seconds in her semi-final race.
Shevaughn Thomas of Vere Technical returns to the final while Nastassia Fletcher of Hydel, last year’s Class Three winner will also seek to be among the medals.
Edwin Allen High’s Tony-Ann Beckford, who was fourth in last year’s final, leads the qualifiers in the Class One final, running 53.37s in the semi-finals to lead Hydel High’s Abigail Campbell and St Elizabeth Technical’s Shanque Williams, who was eighth in last year’s final.
Hydel High’s Sashana Johnson ran 55.25s to lead the Class Three finalists and is followed by Port Antonio High’s Kevina Bourne (55.41s), Holmwood Technical’s Tracey-Ann Evans (55.83s) and Trisaenia Cohen (56.74s).
