Rebooting your job and client hunt
Dear Editor,
The job search and client hunt can be a marathon rather than a sprint. You’ve worked hard, polished your resume and portfolio, and constantly advertised yourself, but the money well is beginning to dry up. It’s a tough situation to be in, but remember that you’re not alone. Here are several ways to get your search back on track:
1)Reassess and refine:
• Sharpening your focus: Take a step back and rethink your target demographic. Are you applying for jobs that actually match your talents and experience? Are you targeting the correct clients who value your offerings when it comes to client acquisition? Refining your emphasis can result in more concentrated applications and proposals.
• Revamping your materials: Have a trusted friend or online jobs agency check your resume, cover letter, and portfolio to ensure clarity and effectiveness. Consider taking a free online course to improve your resume writing and portfolio presentation.
• Networking like a pro: Reinvigorate your networking efforts. Attend industry events, reconnect with past colleagues on LinkedIn, and reach out to people in your field for informational interviews.
2) Broaden your horizons:
• Explore temporary or contract work: Temporary or contract work can provide some financial security while keeping your skills sharp and expanding your network.
• Consider freelancing on micro-task platforms: Platforms like Upwork or Fiverr can offer smaller freelance projects to generate some income while showcasing your skills to potential clients.
• Volunteer your expertise: Volunteering for a cause you care about allows you to stay active in your field, build new connections, and potentially gain valuable experience.
3) Prioritise your well-being:
• Fight burnout: The job search can be emotionally draining. Make sure to schedule time for self-care activities that help you manage stress and maintain a positive outlook.
• Celebrate small wins: Acknowledge your accomplishments, no matter how small. Landing an interview, receiving positive feedback on a proposal, or connecting with a valuable contact are all steps in the right direction.
Remember that a successful job or client search takes time and persistence. By refocusing your efforts, exploring new avenues, and prioritising your well-being, you can keep yourself motivated and increase your chances of landing that perfect opportunity.
