A STAR IS BORN
Excelsior’s Damor Miller announces himself in Class One Boys’ 100m final
Excelsior’s Damon Miller ended his Boys’ Champs career in glory, pulling off an upset to win the Class One Boys’ 100m at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium last night.
Miller stunned the field when he came from behind to win the event in 10.31 seconds. Khamani Gordon of Calabar was second in 10.37s while third place went to Yourie Lawrence-Clarke of Kingston College (KC) in 10.45s.
Miller was the underdog going into the final.
“I am feeling very good about my performance because I was always confident that I was going to take home the gold medal,” he said. “My confidence coming into the event was very high because I had run a 10.45 last year, so I knew that this year I could have done a lot better, and I did that, so I am overjoyed with my performance.”
KC’s Nyrone Wade ran 10.43s to win the gold medal in Class Two. He won ahead of Excelsior’s Malike Nugent (10.52s) and Tavaine Stewart of Herbert Morrison 10.55s. Wolmer’s’ Mario Ross justified his favourites tag as he clocked 10.88s to capture Class Three. Calabar’s Ched Brown took home silver in 10.90s while third place went to Naethan Bryan of St George’s College in 11.02s.
Earlier, JC secured a one-two finish in the final of the Boys’ Class Two long jump competition, with Michael-Andre Edwards taking the gold with a mark of 7.18m and his teammate J’Avair Cato securing silver with a leap of 6.85m. KC’s Amani Phillips claimed the bronze medal with a mark of 6.78m.
In their second victory of the day, JC’s Cavel Nooks clinched the Class Three 1,500m in 4:20.79 minutes. Nooks’ teammate, Bevin Davey, secured third place in 4:22.78, while Phillip Palmer of St Jago claimed second in 4:21.42.
Shortly after, Samuel Creary outsprinted his rivals to the finish line to secure the victory in the Boys’ Class Two 1,500m final, clocking a respectable time of 4:04.01. Nahashon Ruto from KC finished second in 4:04.03, with third place going to Raheem Palmer of Alphansus Davis in 4:08.57.
KC’s Marcinho Rose clocked an impressive time of 46.93s to lead all qualifiers into today’s final of the boys’ Class One 400m. Rose, who is highly favoured to win the event, is the only one to dip below the 47-second barrier from yesterday’s semi-finals.
He is expected to face strong competition from his teammate Amal Glasgow, who holds the second-fastest time of 47.45s entering the final. Omary Robinson of JC (47.60), Zachary Wallace of Maggotty (47.92), and Daniel Francis of Alphansus Davis (48.38), are the other main contenders for the gold medal heading into the final.
KC’s Markel Smith is also highly favoured to win the Class Two 400m gold medal after he won his semi-final heat in 48.07s. Calabar’s Nickecoy Bramwell, who is also one of the favourites for gold, is also through to today’s final with a time of 50.09s. The other main contenders in today’s final are Demarco Bennett of Excelsior (48.40), Rashad Buckle of St Jago (49.11), Jabari Matheson of William Knib (48.36), and Dantae Simpson of Port Antonio (49.23).
