Kashief Lindo’s first song of 2024 has Latin flavour
When they were writing lyrics for what became Maybe, Kashief Lindo and his father Willie had no idea the song would take on a Spanish feel until the latter began playing his guitar. What turned out to be his solo gave it a distinct Latin sound.
Produced by Lindo senior for the family’s Heavybeat Records, Maybe is Kashief Lindo’s first song of 2024. The singer cares little about what label people gives his music, he just wants it to resonate with fans.
“I don’t like to classify myself, I’m just an artist who sings. But I’m a reggae artiste, that’s what I’ve been since the jump,” he said.
Maybe came about through a typical Heavybeat Records songwriting session. Willie Lindo, a top musician at Federal Records in Kingston during the 1970s, initiated the creative process with Kashief adding his touches.
Usually, everything falls into place after that.
“The songs are really based on my energy and what I feel. It’s always been that way and it was no different with Maybe, I just felt a certain energy,” said Kashief.
That energy was responsible for songs like No Can Do hitting the charts, and announcing him as a bona fide talent in the late 1990s. He has since released a handful of albums, the most previous being Love On, which came out in 2021.
Willie Lindo is the backbone of Heavybeat Records’ sound and success. He produced and played on most of the label’s greatest triumphs including Beres Hammond’s Soul Reggae album, as well as What One Dance can Do, that singer’s breakthrough hit in 1985.
Heavybeat Records also produced Dennis Brown’s Inseparable album, and hit songs by Boris Gardiner (I Wanna Wake up With You), Jimmy Riley (Rougher Yet) and Wayne Wade (Love You Too Much).
