What are your expectations for St Jago at Champs 2024?
The Monk Street-based school will be one to watch in a number of events on both sides. The athletes have been breaking records and running personal best times throughout the various meets this season and over the five-day championships we’ll see credible performances to land both the boys and girls in top four placings.
Both St Jago High teams — boys and girls have made it a habit of finishing in the top five at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships and this year should be no different. St Jago is one of two schools to have won both boys’ and girls’ Champs and while both squads will have quality athletes who could spring a surprise or two, a championship run might be a bridge too far, given the strength and depth of the teams ahead of them.
The girls’ team has slipped from a close second to Edwin Allen in 2021, to third in 2022, and were fourth last year while the boys were fourth at the last two stagings after taking fifth in 2021.
St Jago’s girls’ team has always proven to be tough competitors at Champs. Their four titles spanning the years 1996 to 1999 and consistent top five finishes is evidence of this. Having missed out on a second-place finish by a mere 2.75 points at Central Champs behind Edwin Allen (384.25) and Hydel (254.25), St Jago (251.50) must be oozing confidence and must feel that they can have a similar showing at the big dance. Last year they were fourth and, given the showing at the regional Championships, could very well push for a top two finish at the end of the night of the 23rd.
