Carl Meeks steps out again
Carl Meeks, who had a hit run during the late 1980s with Redman International, returns to the Jamaican dance scene for the first time in many years with appearances on two events this week.
The first takes place this evening, at Dancehall Thursdays, on (Dumbarton Avenue, where veteran bassist Lloyd Parks will be honoured.
Other acts include Peter Metro, Dicky Ranking, and Goshen, as well as a sound system clash between Youthman Promotion Soundstation and Metro Media.
His second appearance will be on Saturday at Pon Top Seafood Grill & Bar on Westminster Road, where Luv Locz Entertainment from Ohio, Isha Bel, and Iya Tundeh are also being featured.
In 1988, Meeks hit the charts with Youthman and Weh Dem Fah, produced by Hugh “Redman” James’ Redman international label. Both songs are on Redman International: We Run Things, a 40-song retrospective album released in December by VP Records.
“Dem days with Redman was great, wi used to go to his house an’ hang out, an’ jus’ vibes to music. Wi had a lotta good times,” recalled Meeks, who lives in North Carolina.
The dreadlocked artiste, who worked at Desnoes and Geddes as a forklift operator, finished second in the 1985 Tastee Talent Contest.
He has four songs on the Redman International compilation, the others being
Danger and Heard About My Love (with deejay Daddy Lilly).
